Department offers the broadest possible spectrum of surgical treatment options for both congenital and acquired heart diseases– approx. 1800 cardiac and vascular procedures of children and adults are performed annually, including an average of 50 heart transplantations. The Center specializes in:

  • surgical treatment of coronary heart disease: coronary revascularization (thoracic arteries, radial artery), hybrid treatment (MIDCAB/TECAB +PCI), minimally invasive surgery (MIDCAB, TECAB), OPCAB and CABG procedures
  • surgical treatment of complications of coronary heart disease –surgical remodelling of damaged left ventricle (SVR), ischemic mitral regurgitation plasty, postinfarction VSD closure, cardiac resynchronization therapy
  • videoscopic minimally invasive radial and thoracic artery harvesting and also saphenous venous grafts
  • surgical treatment of acquired heart diseases –implantation of mechanical and biological valves, including stentless or homogenic implantations, valve repair procedures
  • reconstructive surgery – mitral valvuloplasty (the greatest number in Poland, more than 750 procedures), aortic valvuloplasty in children and adults (more than 60 procedures), tricuspid valvuloplasty, with reconstruction in Ebstein Syndrome, using different techniques, including videothoracoscopic minimally invasive techniques
  • surgical ablation in drug-resistant atrial fibrillation, endoscopic and minimally invasive ablation
  • surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases in children and adults
  • surgical treatment of ascending aortic and arch aneurysms, using different techniques, valve-sparing aortic root repair, ascending aorta and aortic arch reconstruction
  • endovascular and hybrid treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms (aortic stentgraft implantations) – leading program in Poland
  • thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm treatment
  • surgical treatment of acute and chronic pulmonary embolism– first program in Poland, successfully realized and developed
  • surgical treatment of heart tumorsand superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS)
  • treatment of the end-stage heart failure by performing heart transplantation in adults and children – first and the greatest program in Poland (more than 750 patients between 1985-2008)
  • treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome in infants and small children using the ExtraCorporeal Membranous Oxygenation (ECMO) systems – the first such program in Poland, successfully realized and developed
  • life-saving programs for patients with acute heart failure- mechanical circulatory assistance program using mechanical assist devices for heart regeneration (in case of potentially reversible damage) or transplantation (in case of permanent and severe heart damage)
  • research and clinical programs regarding heart regeneration, realized in co-operation with international centers
  • active participation in leading world research programs (STICH, FREEDOM, ART)
  • training and educational programs for cardiac surgeons from Poland (annual conferences, symposiums, workshops, courses) and abroad: from Ukraine, Russia, Germany, Slovakia, Japan, Italy.
